Joey Bada$$ Returns with His “Head High”
The Brooklyn-bred rapper-turned-actor has returned releasing his latest single, “Head High” with Colors Studios.
After his first album tease, “The Reve3nge” released just last month fans weren’t expecting another track so soon. Before January we hadn’t heard a new Joey project since ‘The Light Pack’ dropped in 2020. If you recall, this was a three-track EP that Joey didn’t really want anyone to call an EP. This had fans more than happy to receive the track that sits at just over three minutes long. The growth is evident in Joeys raspy rhymes over a smooth mix produced by, none other than, Statik Selektah. Joey reflects on how the life of his loved ones was taken in a second and encourages listeners to value each moment that lies ahead.
“Head High" was written by Joey & Statik Selektah shortly after the passing of Nipsey Hussle. On the track Joey mentions his late mentor and Pro Era label mate Capital Steez, who passed away in 2012, and reminisces on memories with the late XXXtentacion who lost his life at 20. The artist mentions a studio session at X’s house, due to X being put on house arrest, and his first honorable impressions of the rapper. After reflecting on all he’s lost, Joey wants no one to be surprised when you see him trying to carpe diem.
“Every second, gotta own it,” he raps, “'cause you never know when could be your last.”
This drop has us eager for his forthcoming album that is coming this year “for sure, for sure,” he said in an Instagram Live back in January. In the meantime we’ve got this track on repeat. Watch Joey’s live performance of “Head High” on ‘A COLORS Show’ above.
