The New Jersey Artist Whose Flowers Are Overdue
We’re shining a light on New Jersey artist Keiona Josey, better known as Freakquencee.
The artist first caught our attention in 2021 which led to her becoming an inspiration for our first project, Beloved. “I’m organic. I kind of let people know all the time that it’s okay to be human and who you are. Nowadays you don’t get too many genuine people, too many genuine souls,'“ she says. Freakquencee shows that she’s shedding any layers of ego in captivating tracks like “Running” where she details being chased by issues of trauma from her past.
The artist began her creative journey as a poet, eventually turning to writing raps and more. During her junior year of high school is when she began building a supportive community of creatives, including one poet that would change the trajectory of Freakquencee as we know it. Josey recalls the poet saying “You were explaining to me how people don’t really understand the way you vibrate and move as an artist. The doctors still don’t really understand the way frequency, or energy, vibrates throughout the eardrum and that’s just like you”— the name stuck ever since.
With her discography consisting of uplifting melodies (Light of Mine) and powerful anthems (Smile Again) it’s hard to let the artists messages elude you. Each of her tracks are accompanied by even more captivating performance only one like she can put on. The artist explained that she wants to show people through music that it’s okay to be themselves. “It’s okay to express emotions, to feel. I want people to see throughout my life story that they can be open, that we do share a lot of the same pain. It’s okay to release that and show people what we’re going through.” We can see that opening up is only lifting this Freakquencee higher.
